And then, entirely unprompted, before he had even begun to pose his first question of the day, the Young Girl spoke.
A faint, slight, rasping sound, as if from a dry parched voice, or from far away on a dry dusty wind, she spoke: –
“I bid thee welcome Don Augustin Calmet.”
The room became suddenly still.
Neither the guards nor he had ever mentioned his name. And given the impression afforded of the Young Girl by him, he was sure that the stranger had not.
“There is much that I have heard mentioned of thee.”
